Last Sunday, I hopped in the ride and set off on a challenging journey…
St Louis was my destination. SHUTTERFEST was my experience. How much could I jam into just 3 days? Would my body hold up with little sleep and unlimited High School Seniors to shoot with?
SHUTTERFEST is the premiere Photography Conference in the nation. It is held at historic Union Station Hotel in St Louis, Missouri. This was my first year. I had done my homework… spending countless hours online in the conference Facebook group. I figured I had to head to the conference with an open mind, ready to shift and change at any moment. There were 2000 of “us” photographers going and around 250 models to shoot with at our discretion. We could shoot around the clock, if we wanted to. There were also workshops and lectures to increase our knowledge. But, I was there for two main goals: To shoot as many Seniors as I could and create relationships with those who take care of their Photography clients with excellence. I got to do both.
At this point, I have not counted. But, I figure that I got to shoot over 20 Seniors in a 3 day stretch! It was amazing. There were girls from New Jersey, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama and Missouri. I had the BEST time, hanging out and getting to know their Moms while creating some amazing images. The historic parts of St Louis provided ridiculous backdrops for portraits.
I showed up ready for battle! I brought large amounts of fruit and water to make sure my energy levels were high. I showed up a night early to get ahead on rest, because I knew I would need it. The weather for the week was pretty crazy. We were dodging thunder storms and pouring rain. But, overall the conditions to create images was ideal!
I got to study under some of the greats in our industry. Of course, Sal Cincotta- who put on the event and is the one guy out there giving top level advice and education. I got to do a hands on Senior Portrait Fashion class with Craig Lamere- one of the greats in our industry! I got to do more studying of the ring type lighting that I have just implemented for my Seniors recently.
I’m not gonna’ lie… by the end of the 3 days I was sore and tired and ready to get back to my wife and baby (I love you guys and thanks for making it possible for me to go!). But, I had created some friendships with some fantastic Photography Studio owners and had connected with a bunch of Seniors and their Moms! The images are just a reflection of the fun we had and the adventures we went on! There is so much more to share. But, here are a bunch of the first images that I have finished my Photographic Art on!
See you next time!!!

“My name is JB Brookman. I’m a rock star concert photographer who grew up shooting the biggest stars in the world. The stages and venues of Hollywood and LA used to be my home, but now I have made a home in the suburbs of Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee. Shooting Taylor Swift, U2, Elton John and Ed Sheeran is great, but my true passion is creating highly stylized, authentic and modern portraits of High School Seniors, making them feel like they are at the center of the stage.”
