90 IMAGES OF SUMMER

We spent a lot of time exploring Route 66, between Los Angeles and Flagstaff, Arizona.  It’s interesting to “get yourself lost” on the old road- which weaves in and out and around Highway 40.  The aging asphalt is falling apart and is full of giant potholes and cracks, making some serious slow driving, as you head East.  You always seem to have the feeling that you will never find your way back to the main road.

We found this abandoned structure and were struck by the desolation of the area.  As our team explored the site for the ideal image, a train came roaring by.  I had to hurry to get my photography gear set and the settings just right to capture the train, in motion.

One friend mentioned that this image reminded him of the Denzel Washington movie, The Book Of Eli.  In reality, I was inspired by an old classic song by the Welsh band, The Alarm.  Here are some of the powerful and stirring lyrics to “Unsafe Building”:

Declare yourself an unsafe building
Suffer the indignation of your world,

To climb the ladders you’ve gotta suss out the snakes
Remember your height Remember to never look down.

For now you’ve made your choice
You’ve gotta take your chance
Find a way out now

For I
I have declared myself unsafe
I have declared myself unsafe

Come out of the cupboard and into the real world
Open the window and let some light into your life
It’s dark in the tunnel but keep on coming through

Straight down the line and sure enough you’ll see the lights that shine

For now you’re young
You’ve got to run
You’ve got to take the chance
Find a way out now

Oh now now I
I have declared myself unsafe
I have declared myself unsafe

Behind the wardrobe there lies a better life
Burn all your old clothes
Start again make yourself something new
Rebuild your life
Rebuild your home
Rethink your values
Rethink yourself right through

Oh now now I
I have declared myself unsafe
I have declared myself
Unsafe, unsound, unknown, unwanted, unnecessary
I’ve been condemmed
Oh I’m unsafe

Yes I am

Oh I
I have declared myself unsafe
I have declared myself
Oh I
I have declared myself unsafe
I have declared myself
Oh I
I have declared myself unsafe
I have declared myself

“My name is JB Brookman. I’m a rock star concert photographer who grew up shooting the biggest stars in the world. The stages and venues of Hollywood and LA used to be my home, but now I have made a home in the suburbs of Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee. Shooting Taylor Swift, U2, Elton John and Ed Sheeran is great, but my true passion is creating highly stylized, authentic and modern portraits of High School Seniors, making them feel like they are at the center of the stage.”
